How to make a YouTube thumbnail under 2 MB
To make a YouTube thumbnail under 2 MB, export your artwork as a JPEG and reduce its file size while checking that the text still looks clear. AICrop’s YouTube thumbnail presets adjust JPEG quality toward that limit automatically. If a detailed 4K image cannot fit, try the 1280 × 720 preset or simplify the artwork before exporting again.

| Question | What to do |
|---|---|
| Uploading from a phone? | Export a video thumbnail under 2 MB. |
| Source is small or already soft? | Try 1280 × 720. A 4K canvas cannot restore missing detail. |
| Source has enough detail for 4K? | Try 3840 × 2160, then inspect small text after JPEG compression. |
| Uploading from a computer? | YouTube currently accepts up to 50 MB; AICrop still targets 2 MB. |
The 2 MB limit depends on where you upload
YouTube’s current Help page lists a 2 MB limit for video thumbnails uploaded from mobile and a 50 MB limit on desktop. AICrop targets the smaller limit for both of its video thumbnail presets so you can prepare a file for a mobile upload. This is the tool’s export choice, not a claim that YouTube applies 2 MB everywhere.
If you are uploading from a computer, a larger file may already meet YouTube’s requirements. Check the actual error before compressing it. A rejected upload can have another cause, including account eligibility or thumbnail rules; reducing bytes does not resolve those problems.
Choose a resolution your source can support
YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio. AICrop offers that 4K size and a smaller 1280 × 720 option. Both have the same shape. The smaller option is useful when the original is modest in resolution or a detailed 4K export needs too much compression.
The 4K canvas has nine times as many pixels as 1280 × 720. That does not mean its JPEG will be exactly nine times larger: file size also depends on detail, noise and compression. A plain background and a short line of large text often need fewer bytes than a busy photograph. Exact output size needs an actual export.
Enlarging a 1280 × 720 source to 4K does not create sharper lettering or restore facial detail. Use the original design file when available. Avoid repeatedly opening and saving a JPEG, because each new lossy export can add visible artifacts.
Export a thumbnail without stretching it
Prepare your text and artwork first, then open the YouTube thumbnail resizer. AICrop accepts one JPG, PNG or WebP up to 10 MB and 40 megapixels. It does not add text, remove a background or design the thumbnail for you.
- Choose your image and select either the 1280 × 720 or 3840 × 2160 thumbnail preset. Keep only the output sizes you need.
- Choose Crop to fill for a full 16:9 frame, then adjust the focus if an edge cuts off your subject. Choose Fit whole image to retain the entire source with a background, or Blur background to place it over a blurred copy.
- Download the individual JPEG, or use Download ZIP if you selected several sizes. Extract the JPEG from the ZIP before uploading it to YouTube.
- Open the saved JPEG at its actual size. Check text edges and facial detail, then inspect how readable the composition is when displayed small.
If compression makes the thumbnail look worse
AICrop tries progressively lower JPEG quality settings until the preset meets its file-size target. There is no manual quality slider. If the available settings cannot meet the limit, it reports an error instead of silently handing you an oversized file.
Try the 1280 × 720 preset after a failed or visibly overcompressed 4K export. If the result is still poor, return to your design and reduce clutter around the text. Large readable letters can survive compression better than tiny lettering over a textured photograph. Save a new source from the editor and resize that, keeping the original untouched.
A ZIP archive is convenient for collecting several exports, but its size is not the thumbnail’s size. Upload the JPEG inside it. Renaming a PNG to end in .jpg also does not convert or compress the image; use an actual JPEG export.
Check the file and the upload destination
The saved file is a JPEG, so any transparent area becomes a background color. Image processing and ZIP creation happen in your browser. Save the download before closing the tab; a shared size-setup link does not contain your photo or preserve the editing session.
These presets are for landscape video thumbnails. YouTube recommends 2160 × 3840, or 9:16, for Shorts, and verified accounts can upload a custom Shorts thumbnail in desktop YouTube Studio. Use the current YouTube Help instructions for your device and account. If your thumbnail uploads successfully but the banner above your channel is cropped, that needs a separate safe-area check.
